    Active Ingrediant in Alinia: nitazoxanide

    Uses for taking Alinia

    Alinia is used to treat diarrhea caused by the parasites Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lambia in children ages 1 through 11. Safety and effectiveness of Alinia is not known in patient with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), patients with immune problems, children less than 1, children greater than 11, or adults.

    Possible Alinia Side Effects:

    Some possible side effects with Alinia include:

    • abdominal pain
    • diarrhea
    • vomiting
    • headache

    When these side effects occur, they are generally mild and go away in a short time.

    Things to be cautious of while taking Alinia:

    Tell your health care provider if you:

    • have diabetes, because Alinia contains sucrose, a type of sugar
    • have or had liver problems
    • have or had kidney problems
    • have or had bile or gallbladder problems

    Tell your health care provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Some medicines may affect how Alinia works or Alinia may affect how your other medicines work.
